What the year looks like here

East Machias has a small annual calendar, but the region around it fills every month. The busiest weeks are June and August; the best weeks for colour are mid-October. Dates shift year to year, so check with the organiser before you set off.

Month by month

The rest of the year

Not every month has a festival, but there is always something going on outdoors — and the quiet months are the ones locals like best.

January – March

The quiet season. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on the old rail trail, ice fishing on the ponds, wood-stove warmth in the inns, and the lowest rates of the year. Roads can be slick for weeks after a nor'easter — check conditions before you set out.

Also: quiet hours at the library in Machias; the village historic district is a lovely winter walk on a clear day.

April – May

Mud season gives way to maple. The Down East Spring Birding Festival arrives in early May, and the maple producers around Marshfield and Columbia Falls open for the season. Some country stores run a maple-weekend open house.

Also: opening of the seasonal trail network; the first boats get underway in the harbours.

June

Margaretta Days takes over downtown Machias for the month of June, with living history and a commemoration of the first naval battle of the Revolution. June is also the best month for black bears and for long daylight on the trails.

Also: blueberry farm stands open through the summer; the boating season is under way.

July

Peak season. Eastport's Fourth of July is the loudest weekend of the year on this coast, and the harbour is busy all month. Accommodation and fuel get tight — book ahead and fill up the tank early.

Also: the Bay of Fundy International Marathon in the Calais area; peak wildlife viewing.

August

The busiest festival month. The Machias Wild Blueberry Festival runs in the third week and weekend, and Farmer Fest takes over Swiftwater Farm in East Machias at the end of the month. This is also the height of the wild blueberry harvest.

Also: warm water at Roque Bluffs; the best week for a quiet beach at Jasper.

September – October

The Machias Harvest Fair closes out September at the old railroad station. October is the reason many people come: the fall foliage along the rivers and the coast road is at its best in the middle of the month, and the light is extraordinary.

Also: deer season; October storms begin; the trail season is at its most comfortable.

November – December

Dark evenings and good food. The inns and restaurants settle into quieter hours, the harbours empty out, and the towns put on their holiday lights. The first nor'easters usually arrive late in the season.

Also: the annual town report and select board meetings; a good time to visit if you want the town to yourself.

Year round, any month

  • Walking the East Machias historic district on Main Street.
  • The Down East Sunrise Trail through town — all seasons.
  • Public meetings and talks at the East Machias Historical Society.
  • Salmon viewing and questions at the Aquatic Research Center.
  • Porter Memorial Library in Machias for a rainy afternoon.
